My Patch Preparation Rundown

For this month's Gold Blogging Carnival, Stede of Late Night With Stede asks, "How do you prepare for changes in the game?  How does it affect you at patch time"

Reading the Patch Notes

The first thing I do for a new patch is read the patch notes in their entirety and then re read them while taking notes of my own.  Normally these notes are just taken mentally but I've vowed to write them down and share them from now on in order to (hopefully) avoid missing something.  I can't even begin to stress how important it is to read the patch notes.  Often times I'll find myself in trade chat, dungeons and raids, trying to explain changes to those who haven't taken the time to read the patch notes.  While I don't mind being helpful, it's impossible to help those who won't help themselves.

How I Take Notes

I categorize my notes in the same way that the official patch notes are categorized.  I start at each category and take a mental note of the change, then I look at how that change could affect me, and more recently I also look at how each change could affect my readers as far as gold making goes.

I start with the classes and look for any changes that will affect popular glyph, gem, and/or enchant choices.  I'm actually horrible with this, as I'm not SUPER familiar with all of the classes.  This is something I'm working to improve upon.

Second, I look at the profession notes.  For each profession, I review the new recipes and take note of the new recipes, materials and calculate new material requirements.  From these notes, I then determine whether or not demand for their materials will be affected.  I then act accordingly.  Stock more mats if needed or stock less than normal.  For me, it's all about having a feel for my server's economy.  In addition, for materials obtained by daily cool downs, I look at the requirements for those cool downs and decide when and how I will be either selling the materials or buying them up.

After that, it's all about catching changes to items and creatures.  This time around, the popularly farmed troggs in Deepholm are getting their drops nerfed, which may mean even less availability of Embersilk Cloth.  I didn't go out on a farming frenzy but I'm buying up some less than normal priced cloth to hopefully sell off for a higher price once I see the availability of it decrease.  If it doesn't, then no big deal, I should easily be able to break even at least.  As for changes to gear that can be purchased via valor, justice, conquest, or honor points, it pays to know when it gets extremely easier to get that gear.  And with the LFR and Flex content being released in stages, it's good to know that your "LFR only" affected customers may be focused on other alts until they get their new content.  What's this mean for me?  Well for certain, I won't be camping the AH after day one of the new patch!!!  Hmm... that's kind of falling into the next part of the question.

How Patch Preparation Affects Me

Preparing for an upcoming patch helps me know what to expect and develop a game plan for meeting customer demands as theirs begin to match or outweigh the supply.  If I do it correctly, or at least close to it, I'll see my rewards in terms of high return on initial investments and I'll especially yield significantly more profit in significantly less time.

Every Day

Every day, I'll be shopping for all of my crafting materials and buying as long as I feel comfortable with the prices.  Ensuring that I keep doing this every day will help me keep track of availability and cost of all of my required materials.  It will also help me determine if I need to increase the cost of any of my end products that I sell.  I can also keep track of this via charts from The Undermine Journal, but I like my mental notes better :)

Day One - Tuesday

On the first day of this patch I will be doing my normal posting routine of gems and glyphs since these sales will be affected by the class changes and changes to items with effects that no longer benefit from haste.  From there I will log all of my crafting characters to farm their patterns and complete their cool downs.  I will also craft any new items learned as a result of this.  I will avoid posting any gear other than the new ilvl 476 pvp gear until the weekend.  After that, I'll do another round of posting those glyphs and gems  Oh... I might want to make sure all of my gold making related add-ons are up to date, which pretty much means updating TSM and all of its modules.

Day Two Through Four - Wednesday to Friday

If my competitors in the glyph, gem, and item enhancement markets are still wasting their time, fighting over sales, I won't even bother with those markets.  With ONE exception: New glyphs!!!!  I'll make a separate group in TSM just for the new glyphs and I'll use it until my competitors become more competitive in this market.  I'll be posting more of these than the older glyphs for sure.

I'll continue to do my daily cool downs, craft the new items and send them off to list on the AH.  With the normal SoO just being released, content isn't going to go down that fast.  Only 1 wing of Flex difficulty will be available and none of the LFR content will be released until day eight!!  This means (for my server, your mileage may vary) everyone will have time to gear up their alts with the points they've been stockpiling and they'll likely eat through my competition's 'cheap' supplies.  Depending on how things look, I may take the time to OVER CUT everyone by 100-300 gold, just to see what happens.

Days Five Through Seven - Saturday to Monday

For me, this means it's time to start selling those greens again and to attempt to sell what's left of my 458 pvp gear.  I'll continue on with posting glyphs, posting 1 extra for the new glyphs.  Gems and item enhancements may or may not be posted, dependent upon how the market is acting.  As stated in days two through four if the market looks right, I'll just OVER CUT everyone, just to see what happens.

Week Two Through Week Seven - 17 September to 21 October

In the following weeks, I'll be slightly ramping up my efforts to make some sales.  I'll continue to do cool downs and craft new items and restock any that have sold.  However, for the most part, I'll be lying in wait.  The real sales most likely will pick up on 22 October, when everyone will have all modes of SoO available to them.  This will be the first week that my LFR customers get their full experience and a chance at gear from EVERY boss on ALL of their toons.  And IMO, most of my sales go to LFR loot and new alts since most people don't have time to raid in a normal group 7 days a week.

My List

Check out my Patch 5.4 Preparation Post for detailed information on all of the profession changes and updates.  I wish you all the best with your upcoming sales in this new patch!!!

Thank you Cold for passing this carnival off to me.  It's an honor to host this project.  Thanks to all who have congratulated me on being the new host.  Last month's turn out was fabulous and in spite of all of my AFKness, I hope to get a decent turn out this month.

August 2013 Gold Blogging Carnival Topic

This month's topic was inspired by Profitz of  Wowprofitz.com.

Since hitting gold cap, I've been just cruising along, still doing my normal gold making routine and lately I've been feeling a little burnt out.  A few days ago on twitter, Profitz asked, "What keeps you playing WoW?"   I instantly thought I could add a gold making spin to his question and make it this months carnival topic, which in turn inspired some deeper thinking.  What is it that keeps me going when making gold?  How do I keep from getting burnt out?  It really got me thinking about what I actually do in the game to make gold or to avoid getting burnt out.  So, for this month's question I ask you:

What keeps driving you to make gold?  What do you do to avoid getting burnt out?

July 2013 Gold Blogging Carnival Topic

This month's topic is brought to you by Nev of Auction House Addict . And what perfect timing as I've just hit gold cap :)

Earlier this month, Phat Lewts of Phat Lewts' Gold Blog posted a rant about total gold earned, and how that number could be manipulated to give you a false reading of how much gold you've earned.  Nev of Auction House Addict recently sent me a suggestion for this month's topic, inspired by Phat Lewts' post.  She points out that "Phat Lewts raises a few points as to how some newer gold makers are using that huge number as
'proof' of how good they are." This got her thinking about a new post, and she thought that it would make a great Gold Blogging Carnival Topic.  For July's Gold Blogging Carnival Topic, Nev asks:

What is your definition of a good gold maker?  How do you measure gold making success?

Server Transferring One Toon

This post is in response to my June Topic for Cold's Gold Blogging Carnival.  This post should have been live a while ago, but with the bombardment of computer issues (which have been fixed) I haven't been able to write much of anything.  However, this does give some other bloggers a wee bit more time today as I will have the Carnival Post up at 10 PM PDT.

The Why

I've done one server transfer before and I wish I had figured some things out before I did it the first time around.  When it came time to transfer my alts, it was a little too late.  If I were to transfer servers again and could only take one toon, It would be an easy choice.  I would take my hunter since he's my main and I've had him ever since I started playing WoW at the end of Vanila.  Those of you that have read my previous posts may recall that he's an herbalist and transmute specialized alchemist.  I can always change professions before or after a server transfer, depending on which is cheaper, it's expensive either way.  Also, I really enjoy my hunter, I've come to know various changes to the class inside and out, I have more fun soloing things with my hunter than I do with any other class.  Honestly, I think my days of soloing old raids and dungeons are what got me thinking about EVERY single way I can use different materials to make more gold from my runs.

Some Thoughts Before I Begin

Okay, now that I've decided which toon to transfer, I give him 50,000 gold and start planning my move, including how to take ALL of my gold with me.  I just hit 871,000 gold tonight, and I think that's the first time I've publicly shared how much gold I have.  Hmmm... I could be wrong about that though.  So, 821k, how am I going to move it?  I could easily transfer a guild over, meaning I can take 1 million gold and more stock with me, but in this scenario, I can't afford it :(  So I have to get creative.  I haven't bought any of the newer mounts from this expansion, so I would go ahead and buy them. Regardless of which server I transfer to, the vendor purchased mounts will be the same price.  I might even buy up a TCG mount if it's avaliable, I may learn it or try to flip it on the new server.  I don't however, want to tie up all of my gold into some TCG mounts that sometimes take weeks or even MONTHS to sell.  Now that I've discussed some tips, it's time to get into what I would do if faced this transfer situation.

My wife on her lovely Grand Expedition Yak, courtesy of my Cata gold!

Getting My Gold Converted

Step One: Grand Expedition Yak . I've been saving this purchase for when I hit gold cap for the first time.  With this purchase eating 108k from my bankroll, I'm down to 713k to turn into goods to fit in my bags.

Step Two: Orb of Mystery.  I'll probably go ahead and use these, along with a bit of extra gold or mats I have lying around to craft all of the mounts that use these, bringing me down a small chunk to about 413k.

Step Three:  Feel overwhelmed.

Step Four:  Get over it and continue

Step Five:  Clean out my bank to make room for some goods, insert heirlooms for the new alt army I'll need.

Step Six:  Assuming I've already done market research, I will pick either raw mats or crafted goods to stick in my bags to lighten my pockets on the way over to that new server.  In this case, i want a healthy stock of  Living Steel Belt Buckle. They stack to 20 and I can craft some of my stock and leave some of it as raw materials.  I'll also empty out the AH so that I'm actually lowering my gold total.  Right now there are only 13 on the AH at 616g55s each only bringing me down to just under 405k.

Step Seven:  Make sure my alts have some cash for stock, just in case I decide to play them again, 20k each brings me down to 325k.

Step Eight:  Orb of Mystery ... Search TUJ on the new realm for sellers of the mounts that require them.  Work out a deal, maybe let them pay 17k per vice the normal 18k (with guild perk) vendor cost.  It might take a while to offload more than one set and since it only takes 14 to make all of the mounts that's what I'll buy, bringing me down to 73k  But I lose a total of 10k gold to this process.

Step Nine:  Buy my wife the Vial of the Sands.  Averaging around 35-40k for the mount, this brings me down to 33k assuming I'm paying the top price since none are avaliable at the moment but I do know someone who can craft it for me on a whim.  That mount will be much more useful to me if she has it, assuming she were transferring along with me, which would most likely be the case.

Step Ten: Battle Pets!!!  Thanks to Residentevil, Host of the Eviscerated Gaming Podcast and Jojo of Admiring Azeroth, I've become engrossed in this hobby (addiction).  I don't have many 25s and I would like to diversify my pet collection.  I'll buy as many pets as I can with the remaining  33k.  Only buying what I don't have of course, and preferably some that are level 25.   Load up my hunter with my remaining battle stones and other account bound items, and prepare to level some pets on the new realm.  I could spend this 33k on crafting mats or crafted items instead.  But I'm coming from a medium population server and would most likely be making a move to a higher populated server.  Putting my gold into pets seems like a better investment to me.

This might not be the best way to move my gold over given that I'm only transferring one toon.  But it's what I want, and that's what's most important when it comes to transferring servers.  If I'm going to pay real money for a service, I better get as much satisfaction out of it as possible.

How would you transfer your gold to a new server if faced with the choice to move one toon?  Comments welcome below!!

June 2013 Gold Blogging Carnival Topic

For the last few weeks I've noticed a lot of talk on forums, twitter, and the like, about server transfers.  Lots of people are asking about it.  As the amount of WoW subscribers dwindles, and more people start taking vacations as summer approaches, it will become more challenging for most people to do what they like in WoW.  Whether transferring servers for the purpose of raiding, gold making, or increased player interaction, more people are into making gold now than ever before and want to know what to do when faced with the decision to transfer servers.
So for this month's topic, lets discuss what we would do if we could only afford to transfer one of our toons and wanted to take all of our gold with us.

If you were to transfer servers and could take only one toon, which one would you take and why?  What goods would you use to transport all of your gold over the 50k transfer cap?

In some recently exchanged e-mails between Cold and I, we have discussed his Gold Blogging Carnival and its future.  Cold has passed me the torch as the host of the carnival, so all submissions should now be sent to me.  I will be keeping with the traditional schedule of the carnival as well as back linking to Cold's site for all carnival rules, previous topics, and info.  I will also host the a copy of the rules and info on my site.  I will be copying some of his work over to my site, such as his template for his carnival announcements and general info under the carnival tab of my page.  All credit for the carnival idea belongs to Cold, therefor the name of the carnival will still be Cold's Gold Blogging Carnival.  Cold has also done a write up about passing the torch, so you should go check it out!

My Thoughts on the Carnival

I'm honored to be the new host this carnival, as it is something I have read religiously over the last couple of years (sans my hiatus from wow).  I've been reading Cold's Blog ever since I first started making some serious gold at the end of Wrath of the Lich King.  This carnival has introduced me to a lot of other gold bloggers out there, whose blogs I always read.  Right now, there aren't many new things to write about as far as WoW gold making goes.  Not anything that hasn't been covered yet.  However, different perspectives and approaches to those same ideas are always a great and welcome thing.  Each individual gold maker is different from the next in some way or another, it is this diversity that makes Cold's Gold Blogging Carnival such a great success and wonderful tool for both bloggers and readers alike.

June 2013 Carnival Topic Announcement

Check back a little later today for the official topic announcement for June.  I need to finish getting my site ready to host the Carnival before I push out this awesome topic.

I Use Sunsong Ranch for My AH Salad

Cold's Blogging Carnival topic for the month of March revolves around the Sunsong Ranch.  This month, Cold asks us to blog about our current Sunsong Ranch activities.  So what am I currently doing with my Sunsong Ranches?

Currently, I have three level 90s at my farming disposal, each with their own 16 plot farm which I utilize every day.  I have two level 85s with 4 plot farms, but I have abandoned those, as vegetable sales, and the ironpaw shuffle have lost their luster on my server.

Hunter - Alchemist (Transmute Spec)/Herbalist

My hunter is using Enigma Seeds for the herbs and Golden Lotus procs.  Each plot has a chance to spawn as a Golden Lotus or any other Pandaria herb.  I use the Golden Lotus that I get each day to transmute gems.  I send the other herbs (save Fool's Cap) to my Scribe to mill and turn into inks.  I send the Fool's Cap to one of my bank toons to post on the AH.  During the weekdays when supply is shorter, I can sell the Fool's Cap for 100-120 gold per stack.

Shaman - Engineer/Jewelcrafter

My Shaman plants Songbell Seeds for the Motes of Harmony.  I use these in crafting Lord Blastington's Scope of Doom and the Long-Range Trillium Sniper.  My original plan was to use these to craft the occasional Geosynchronous World Spinner.  Once I amassed 12 Spirits of Harmony, I did the research to see how much that mount was going for.  After factoring in the cost of all of the materials, I was extremely disappointed to find that I would only be making about 1-2k gold in profit.  At best, that would be about 166 gold per SoH.  Yep, I think I'll stick to making 500-1000g per SoH by selling the scopes and rifles.  As an additional note, whenever I end up with a stockpile of scopes and rifles, I'll start using the SoHs to create Primal Diamonds, which, when cut, bring me 400g-800g each.  I'm glad this option for creating the diamonds was introduced in patch 5.2!

Paladin - Blacksmith/Scribe

My Paladin plants Songbell Seeds as well.  And again, I use these for crafting.  I craft all of the Masterwork weapons, as well as the ilvl 476 gear from patterns picked up from the Klaxxi. (Fun note: Wowhead has listed the Klaxxi as 1337 !)  There's a lot to list so I have included links to Wowhead.com if this piques your curiosity, leaving you to want to learn more. I also craft the Inscribed Fan which use in crafting the Inscribed Jade Fan and the Inscribed Red Fan.  Once the initial rush of 5.2 is over, I will get back into crafting the level 85 gear on all of my toons, as right now, not many people have time for leveling due to the need for completing the new dailies on their level 90 toons. More on this in a future post.

Overview

Overall, I feel like I put my farms to good use.  I can't wait to get the rest of my crafters to level 90 so I can start pumping out some more gear to list on the Auction House.  I feel like it will be a while before I get back to that project.  The new content of patch 5.2 is currently occupying most of my time.

Check out what others are currently doing on their farms!  Cold of Colds Gold Factory posted a list of this month's Gold Blogging Carnival Participants.  Add him to your blogroll, follow him on Google Plus, or just see my blogroll to see his latest updates.  Didn't participate and want to add what you do?  Leave a shiny new comment below :)

The First Day, In More Ways Than One

20 Days of Gold Making - Day One

First, I would like to thank Nev of The Auction House Addict for creating this gold blogging meme and inspiring me to get started with my first blog ever.  I have also decided to enter my post as part of  Cold's Gold Blogging Carnival and will most likely continue to participate every month!

Over the course of the next few weeks you will get to know a little about my background as a gold maker through my 20 Days of Gold Making posts. It will most likely take longer than just a few weeks to tackle all 20 posts, but I'd like to stay optimistic on the idea of gold blogging.

The First Day - When did you start gold making & what triggered it?

My first in-game sale wasn't exactly an event that triggered my interest in gold making. However, it did teach me some fundamental rules that I now follow when it comes to making gold. Here's the story:

I had just started playing WoW on a trial account right around the time of The Burning Crusade pre-release event.  I started as a Night Elf Hunter and quickly found myself immersed in this new world called Teldrassil.  At this time I had no knowledge of WoW at all. I actually believed that Teldrassil was the only place in the game.  I read all of my quest info and all of the tooltips on my character abilities before taking a step away from my very first silver question mark.  As I leveled and looted my coppers, I vendored items that I didn't need and equipped any gear that I could that seemed like a good upgrade.  I was sure enjoying seeing my wallet fill with coppers and, after a while, silvers! I quickly came across someone who would teach me Alchemy and one who would teach me Herbalism.  I soon learned these professions and began to level them, not knowing what I had just gotten myself into.  After mindlessly chasing the yellow dots on my mini map, acquiring the herbs needed to level my alchemy, I really felt like I was getting somewhere in the game (boy, was my perspective extremely skewed!).

Someone posted in general chat about wanting some minor mana potions.  I quickly looked at my list of items that I could craft with alchemy and found that I could make some for this guy.  Being the helpful person that I am, and wanting to make friends in this strange new world, I quickly responded in general chat "I can make those for you".  After some conversation, we met up, I crafted the potions and he opened trade with me.  Upon trying to confirm the trade, I got an error message.  I soon learned that I needed to have a paid account in order to trade with people.  He was offering me 30 silver for these potions that I had made with ease!  I felt that I just HAD to make this sale, so off I went to set up a paid account (he was nice enough to walk me through it).  After a few minutes, I paid my first monthly subscription fee to Blizzard and quickly logged back in to make my first sale!  I was so excited to see that incredible amount of silver sitting in my wallet!

I think the first thing that triggered my gold making was my love for PvP and the need for my first mount which, back then, was 40 gold at level 40.  I had heard about twinking from a friend and decided that I would make my Hunter a level 49 twink.  I made friends with a PvPing Warlock named Nedflanders who also happened to be an enchanter.  I may not have had the best of gear or enchants as a so-called twink, but it was fun.  At that time I only had one way of making gold without leveling. I didn't have any alts except for my level 1 bank toon.  I needed to kill things and sell their drops for gold.  I started with farming in a cave in Arathi Highlands where the mobs were respawning as fast as I could kill them.  I sold off the mageweave cloth and vendored the gray trash drops.  I gave the greens to my warlock friend to disenchant and also sold off the occasional blue world drop that mostly came from the chests that would spawn in that cave.  Gold making was slow until I discovered my first niche market, the Cold Basilisk Eye trinket.  This was back in the day of having to actually post in general or trade chat to find a group to do dungeons with. On a very low pop server it was almost impossible to ever get into a group to do any lower level dungeons.  This trinket was one of the very few available at that level. It's quite possibly the worst trinket in the game, yet I was able to sell them for 5 gold each due player's needs to fill their empty trinket slots.  Two days after this accidental discovery, I had farmed and sold enough of them to finally buy my mount training and my first mount at level 49.

After moving and taking a couple of weeks off from WoW I got back into the game, tired of PvP and ready to level.  I really don't remember how I made the gold for my epic riding mount and the training but it happened at level 60, if I recall correctly.  I ventured into Outlands for my first experience in The Burning Crusade around the time that The Black Temple patch was released.  At that point I had a new goal in the game, kill Illidan.  In the time that I had been away, my guild had merged with another one that just so happened to be a hardcore raiding guild.  I soon leveled my way to 70 and began gearing up and doing my dailies for gold, trying to save up for a flying mount and training and then the epic flying after that.  While the guild raided, I farmed for them, and I farmed too much.  I made flasks and food for the guild to show my support and dedication and sold excess on the auction house. The gold was building up slowly, but I would eventually get there.  I did end up making my debut into the raiding scene, but I never did get to kill Illidan during that expansion. But that's okay, I found my new reason for playing the game, making gold!
